Depart for Thunder Bay Resort, where Northern Michigan’s natural beauty and warm hospitality await. In the evening, step back in time as you board a horse-drawn carriage that crosses the Thunder Bay River and winds through pine-scented woods to view majestic elk. The ride leads deep into the forest to the Elk Antler Log Cabin, where a blazing fire in a massive split-stone fireplace and enticing aromas welcome you. Enjoy free time and lunch on the island before taking the noon ferry to St. Ignace. Around midday, board the ferry to St. Ignace, where author Mike Fornes joins the group at the dock to guide a narrative ride across the Mighty Mac. As you cross what was once the world’s longest suspension bridge, listen to dramatic eyewitness stories and historic accounts of the brave ironworkers who built the massive structure. Next, travel to the National Shrine of the Cross in the Woods in Indian River, one of Michigan’s most visited sites. The highlight of the shrine is a 55-foot wooden cross carved from a single redwood tree that began growing during biblical times, adorned with Marshall Frederiks’ 28-foot bronze sculpture titled The Man on the Cross. On the return trip, stop in Clare at Cops & Doughnuts—a historic 1896 bakery famously saved from closure by all nine members of the local police force.
